I Think, Therefore, I Am

A company is made up of many things and it takes many moving pieces to make a business successful. The owners of Ascend Hand Therapy, Oliver Serrano & David Myers, spent many hours planning and preparing for the opening of the clinic in November of 2017. A business plan was developed, a name was chosen, a location was found, a lease was signed, etc. One of the most important part of the planning process was creating core values. Now, many companies have core values but do not operate in their light on a daily basis. Oliver and David took the development of core values very seriously. These core values have guided every action since the clinic’s inception and continues to guide operations day in and day out. On August 12, 2019, Ascend Hand Therapy officially opened its second practice location. So, now is an appropriate time to look back at what makes our company what is today: our core values.

Our 4 core values are excellence, integrity, self-motivation, and a fun-loving attitude. As defined on our website (www.ascendhand.com), excellence means “strive to be your very best. Give our patients outstanding service.”

We take pride in providing excellent service from the moment someone contacts our office until the day they no longer need our services. Oliver and David are well respected in the hand therapy community for their commitment to excellence. They have each mentored several students over the years who are now practicing certified hand therapists themselves.

“Integrity: Be honest. Choose to do the right thing, even when nobody is watching.” As many other companies and people do, we highly value acting with integrity in all aspects of our business. Some examples include dealing with insurance companies, appropriately billing for services rendered, and being honest and upfront about our company policies with staff and patients alike. We try to be as transparent as possible.

“Self-Motivation: Be driven. Anticipate needs and opportunities, without being asked.” When we interview potential staff, we interview to our core values. Self-motivation is an important part of increasing the efficiency of our daily operations. Everyone is part of the team and plays their part without having to be micromanaged. We are very proud of the staff for their drive and ability to anticipate possible needs and opportunities every day.

And last but not least is fun-loving attitude. “Don’t take yourself too seriously. Enjoy your job, your co-workers, and your patients.” Since we opened on November 6, 2017, we have come to realize that this core value is what sets Ascend Hand Therapy apart from other clinics. We love what we do, and it comes through in our daily actions. Patients tell us time and time again that they look forward to attending therapy sessions, even though they know that some pain may be involved in the rehab process. Anyone who has spent some time in our clinic has heard Oliver call out “Kobe” (that is, Kobe Bryant, former NBA basketball player) as he shoots his paper towel into the trash can. Of course, Oliver only makes about 1 out of every 75 shots, but we won’t hold that against him… too much.

We want to thank everyone who has been a part of our journey. We are so very fortunate to have a job where we help people everyday to regain functional use of their hands and upper extremities. As the old saying goes: if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. We love what we do and essentially get to play all day. Our core values play a huge part in our company culture and are glad to have so many great people onboard with our vision. In closing, we leave you with our vision statement and hope to serve our community for many years to come.

Vision Statement: Ascend Hand Therapy will inspire patients and other healthcare professionals to challenge the typical way of delivering healthcare in order to provide excellent care in a fun-loving environment.
