Our Story

Ascend Hand Therapy opened its doors in November 2017, as a realization of David Myers' and Oliver Serrano's passion and desire to form a premier hand and upper extremity clinic in the north DFW Metroplex. Their goal was to create a unique atmosphere that combines excellence with a fun-loving attitude.

David Myers, OTR, CHT, MOT

Owner & COO

Originally from New Orleans, David has followed his passion for hand therapy his entire career. With more than 10 years of experience, he has specialized in treatment of the hand and upper extremity since graduating from LSUHSC in 2007. Immediately after graduating, he worked closely with three of Louisiana’s premier hand surgeons at Hand Surgical Associates in the greater New Orleans area. He mentored with two of the most well respected Certified Hand Therapists in New Orleans before moving to Texas. He received his Certification in Hand Therapy (CHT) from the Hand Therapy Certification Commission in 2012.

He moved to DFW in 2013 when he accepted a job at the nationally recognized hospital Children's Medical Center Plano. In addition to treating pediatric hand therapy patients, David also oversaw the everyday clinical operations at both the Plano and Southlake campuses for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department. He collaborated with Senior Vice Presidents, Directors, Clinical Managers, and various departments within Children’s Health to improve the quality of care, customer experience, and staff satisfaction across multiple campuses. Along with Oliver, David worked at the well respected practice of Covenant Hand Therapy prior to opening Ascend Hand Therapy in 2017.

Outside of helping his patients regain functional use of their hands and upper extremities, David enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife and four boys. He is very involved in his church parish, where he and his wife play music together. David is a natural educator and enjoys helping patients better understand their diagnosis and treatment plan. He brings a lighthearted and joyful nature to the clinic that aligns perfectly with our core values.

Oliver Serrano, OTR, CHT, MBA

Owner & CEO

With over 15 years of clinical experience focused on the evaluation and treatment of orthopedic injuries of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder, Oliver Serrano brings a superior level of expertise and knowledge to Ascend Hand Therapy. His career includes stints at several prestigious hospital systems throughout the DFW area, including Baylor Scott & White and Texas Health Resources, as well as employment working directly with numerous well-respected physicians at Plano Orthopedic Sports Medicine & Spine Center and Regional Plastic Surgery Center. Additionally, Oliver has held several management positions, including Assistant Director of Therapy Services at North Dallas Rehabilitation Hospital and Director of Clinical Operations and Sales for Covenant Hand Therapy.

Oliver concentrates his practice on hand and upper extremity orthopedic injuries, with special interests in sports-specific training and rehabilitation and custom splint fabrication with thermoplastics. He received his Certification in Hand Therapy (CHT) from the Hand Therapy Certification Commission in 2009. His hobbies include participation in several organized sports, including basketball, volleyball, and kickball. His sense of humor, enthusiasm for patient care, and dedicated work ethic makes him an integral part of the company culture at Ascend Hand Therapy.

Meet the Therapy Staff


Kristen Favre, OTR, MOT

Staff Therapist

A graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch, Kristen brings a passion for learning and drive for excellence. As a student-athlete at East Tennessee State University, she developed a love for serving others, as well as a high standard academically and athletically. She discovered the hand therapy specialty while working as a therapy technician at Covenant Hand Therapy with Oliver and David. After completing a three-month clinical internship at Ascend Hand Therapy as part of her graduate program she returns to Ascend as a staff therapist in hopes of achieving her goal of becoming a Certified Hand Therapist. She also completed a three-month clinical internship at University of Texas Southwestern Zale Lipshy, the #1 neurological hospital in the DFW area.

A lifelong resident of the Dallas area, Kristen enjoys playing and coaching indoor volleyball, playing beach volleyball, and spending time outdoors with her dog, Bo Duke.

Abbey Mulder, OTR, CHT, MOT

Staff Therapist

Abbey Mulder is an Occupational Therapist and Certified Hand Therapist with over 8 years of experience in varied health care settings specializing in the treatment and rehabilitation of upper extremity conditions throughout life. After completing her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Grace University in Omaha, NE, Abbey was inspired to pursue Occupational Therapy from the impact therapy made in her son’s life. While studying for a Master of Occupational Therapy from Texas Woman’s University in Dallas, Abbey had two clinical fieldwork experiences at hand therapy clinics directing her career towards specialization in upper extremities.

Abbey began her career at Covenant Hand Therapy, a therapist-owned hand therapy practice in Plano where she gained invaluable mentorship with three Certified Hand Therapists, including one of the owners of Ascend Hand Therapy, Oliver Serrano. From 2015 - 2019 she worked as an in-house hand therapist with three world class surgeons in Dallas at Texas Hand and Arm Center.

Abbey obtained the coveted Certification in Hand Therapy (CHT) from the Hand Therapy Certification Commission in 2018. She worked 2 years at a hospital based clinic for Texas Health Resources in Allen with the largest team of hand therapists in the DFW metro. Her special interests include guiding patients through recovery after surgery and restoring function following trauma.

In 2020, she had the opportunity to serve as clinical adjunct faculty to OTD students at TWU in Denton. When she is away from work, Abbey enjoys spending time outside with her family of 4 and 2 rescue dogs.

Meet the Office Staff


Crystal Vleer

Office Manager & Billing Coordinator

Crystal was born in Monterey, California and has resided in the Dallas area since 2012. She has over 10 years of experience delivering superior customer service. Her career includes time as a case manager and lead therapy technician at Epic Healthcare. Most recently, Crystal completed several years of employment at Freedom Powersports in the human resources and public relations departments. Her passion for helping others, positive attitude, and innovative mindset have set her up to be a great asset to the Ascend Hand Therapy team.

As the office manager for Ascend Hand Therapy, Crystal has dedicated her knowledge and passion to ensuring the day-to-day office operations run smoothly. Aside from her passion as front office manager, Crystal is a competitive wake surfer, enjoys spending time outdoors, and loves being with her fur babies.

Aleida Cortez


Aleida is originally from Kingsville, Texas and moved to the Dallas area in 2017 with her daughter. She has several years of customer service experience, including two years of restaurant management and one year as a customer service billing representative for Spectrum. Aleida has a real passion for music and can play multiple musical instruments, including trumpet, violin, French horn, and flute. She was a member of her high school marching band, jazz band, and mariachi band, which all competed in state competitions. She loves spending quality time with her family, which also includes her cat, Lucky. In her free time, Aleida enjoys painting with her daughter, yoga, and cycling. She is excited to be a part of the Ascend Hand Therapy team and to grow professionally in the medical field.
